The MPI Performance Standards are a collection of over 150 documents that each outline the testing requirements and procedures for a given category of product. These categories range anywhere from latex home interior paints to interior steel fuel tank coatings. Of these categories, there are three main varieties. In ascending complexity, they are:

MPI Performance Standards - Uses

MPI is the only independent third-party organization that sets Performance Standards for commercially available paints and coatings that have been adopted by the US and Canadian governments.

Manufacturers will submit their products for Performance Testing against the MPI Performance Standards. All products that meet or exceed Performance testing requirements will be listed on the MPI Approved Products List.

The MPI Approved Products List

Coatings projects will specify Coatings Systems from the MPI Specification Manuals. These Coatings Systems are made up of MPI Performance Standards Categories, which are the ones that make up the MPI Approved Products List.

Once a required Coatings System and the subsequent Performance Standard Categories have been specified; the MPI Approved Products List can by utilized to choose products listed in those Performance Standard Categories. Making the choice by looking at specific Manufacturer, VOC, Leed or Regulatory requirements. While having the piece of mind that all the products listed have been submitted for, and passed, the require performance testing to be listed in those Performance Standard Categories.
